I would love to hear your thoughts!

When I do my food budget/shop every week, these are what I normally make sure I have in the cupboards/fridge:

Carbohydrates: Rice, pasta, cous cous, noodles, rye/wholemeal bread, potatoes

Protein: Tofu, an assortment of tinned beans (chick peas, kidney beans etc), red lentils, nuts/muesli bars

Iron: Mushrooms, green veggies (peas, broccoli, spinach etc)

Other fruit & veg: I normally get an assortment of what’s in season, PLUS fresh herbs.

Then I’ll pick up other useful things for cooking like coconut milk, curry paste (for when I’m to lazy to make it from scratch), tomato puree (for making chilli or pasta sauce).

I tend to experiment a lot and make some unexpectedly delicious meals. If you like, email me at natastrophe@gmail.com and I can share some stuff with you that’s from my "food diary"!

Some of my regular recipes are:
-Thai tofu salad with coconut cous cous
-Grilled veg with balsamic dressing & sundried tomato risoni
-Vegetable & bean chilli with rice
-Teriyaki marinated veg & tofu with udon noodles
-Orange & mint salad (involves grilles veg, cous cous and my special fresh dressing)
-Pasta
-Fried rice

As far as calories, you definitely eat less at a time when eating raw veggies/fruits rather htan cooked, b/c of all the bulk and water in them. You also digest them faster. Just do all things in moderation, and inclue some raw foods in your healthy diet, including veggies and nuts.

With all this pet food recall scary news I would like to start to feed my cats with a healthy home made diet. Does anyone have some good recipes which can be fed long term without running the risk of mineral/vitamin deficiencies or overdosing?

Yes! Do I ever!

And good for you for considering this. I wish you luck in getting your cats converted.

I’ve been researching this issue myself but haven’t yet decided on the right course of action. I’ve been dithering between trying to feed whole prey or doing the grinding myself, or purchasing pre-ground meats from speciality pet stores online, which supplements to use, etc.

If you’re interested in seeing the document I created with all my notes, please email me. I don’t want to post it here because it’s like 3 pages long! But it includes all the resources and tips I’ve been gathering, including the Yahoo groups on raw feeding that I belong to. So let me know if you want to see that.

In addition to the recipes in the links below, there are several other options – other recipes that you make yourself; you can buy pre-ground meat at some pet stores or online; there are supplements you can buy so you don’t have to invest in all the individual ingredients; and the list goes on!

Try the following the following, hopefully it will help

1. Carbohydrate foods and acid foods should not be eaten at the same meal. Do not eat bread, rice or potatoes with lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, tomatoes or other sour fruits. This is because the enzyme, ptyalin, acts only in an alkaline medium; it is destroyed even by a mild acid! Fruit acids prevent carbohydrate digestion.

Tomatoes should also never be combined with starchy food as the combination of the various acids in the tomato, which are intensified on cooking, are very much opposed to the alkaline digestion of starches. They may be eaten with leafy vegetables and fat foods.

2. Do eat nuts, meat, eggs, cheese, or other protein foods at the same meal with bread, cereals, potatoes, sweet fruits. Cakes, etc. Candy and sugar greatly inhibit the secretion of gastric juice and markedly delay digestion and if consumed in large quantities can depress the stomach activity.

3. Do not eat two concentrated proteins at the same meal. Avoid nuts and meat, or eggs and meat, cheese and nuts, cheese and eggs, meat and milk, or eggs and milk or nuts at milk at the same meal. Milk, if taken at all, is best taken alone.

4. Do not eat fats with proteins. This means do not use cream, butter, oil, etc with meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, etc.

5. Do not eat acid fruits with proteins. This is to say, oranges, tomatoes, lemons, pineapples, etc., should not be eaten with meat, eggs, cheese or nuts.

6. Do not consume starch and sugars together.
7. Eat but one concentrated starch food at a meal.
8. Do not consume melons with any other foods. .
9. Milk is best taken alone or let alone.

Breakfast
Fruit. Any fruit in season may be used.
Lunch
A large raw vegetable salad of lettuce, celery, and one or two other raw vegetables plus avocado and alfalfa sprouts or nut and seeds. As an alternative, a vegetable salad (omitting tomatoes), one cooked green vegetable and a starch.

Dinner
A large raw vegetable salad (if nuts or cottage cheese are to be used as the protein, tomatoes may be used in this salad), two cooked non-starchy vegetables and a protein.

Fat meats, sour apples, beans, peanuts, peas, cereals, bread and jam, or hot cakes and honey or syrup, are notoriously slow in digestion and are frequent sources of discomfort and putrescent poisoning.

I’m not on a particular diet, just eating healthier (and less) to gradually lose weight. So far, all I know about diet food is general stuff, like fish and salads are good. And that’s all I’ve made, really.

Also, is steamed short-grain white rice healthy? I love the stuff, so I hope it is.

White rice is not healthy. It’s a simple carbohydrate that your body converts into sugar. Sorry.

My husband and I maintain a normal weight, although we do gain weight from time to time. We eat whatever we want, but we try not to overeat, we avoid sugary foods, fatty foods, and grease. We try to exercise too, although I admit we usually fail. We are good at keeping our weight down and losing it if we gain a few pounds by watching our diet.

Some food ideas: Whole wheat tortillas, avocados, almonds, asparagus, lean cuts of beef, turkey, egg white omelets, sandwiches on 100% whole grain bread, South Beach snack crackers, fat-free cottage cheese, sugar-free yogurt, whole wheat spaghetti noodles. You get the idea. Just don’t deprive yourself, and when you do eat pizza or dessert, don’t overeat and you’ll be fine.

Log onto allrecipes.com. It’s free, and they have thousands of ideas.
