what are the best diet vegetarian foods and recipes?

September 302009

ok, i have tried basically everything minus the atkins. i became a vegetarian a while ago and i lost about ten pounds from simply eating healthy, but i need to lose more, and i am working on a VERY tight budget. any help would be greatly appreciated.

eat only whole wheat bread and pastas (CHEAP)
brown rice (CHEAP)
beans (CHEAP)
miracle cabbage/diet soup (google it) (CHEAP)
lots of water (FREE)
celery and watermelon (CHEAP)
bananas (CHEAP)

***I eat a banana every morning for breakfast plus another serving of raw fruit, like a kiwi, some grapes or berries or something – then i wait to eat anything until lunch, I tell everyone this because seriously if you just do this you’ll lose weight, and it helps with digestion a lot too (which helps you lose weight). Don’t drink coffee either, just lots of water until about 3-4 hours later then eat lunch.

***Make lunch your biggest meal, some ideas
– bean and rice burrito (whole wheat tortilla, brown rice)
– natural peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread (with mashed raspberries, strawberries or slices of banana or apple)
– brown rice and steamed or stir fried vegetables
– veggie pizza on whole wheat crust (home made is cheaper)
– baby carrots, snap peas, celery, peppers to go with it lunch

Just have a big salad for dinner with some nuts/seeds in it for omegas and protein

And lots of water all day!
whole wheat pizza crust:
1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup lukewarm water
1 tablespoon yeast
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted margarine (both work fine)
Directions:
Preheat oven 425 degrees. Mix the yeast with the lukewarm water untill the yeast is disolved. Let it stand for a couple minutes. Add the salt and vegetable oil/melted margarine. Mix. Add the flour, and mix. Roll out the dough. Put it in the oven for 5 minutes. Take it out and rub margerine over it. Add toppings, and cook for 10-15 more minutes.
Serves: 1-2
Preparation time: 20 min.

Just put on some spaghetti sauce and an assortment of veggies, like sliced zucchini and broccoli.

cheese is pretty fattening and I’d advise against it, plus it’s expensive

making your own bread is cheaper too

Gestational Diabetes: how to tell if it’s diet pop!? Can GD go away BEFORE delivery?

September 302009

Ok, kind-of weird. I have Gestational diabetes that is being controlled by checking my blood sugar 2x a day, and cutting out simple sugars such as reg. pop, candy, cookes, sugary foods, etc…
Well, today I got some fast food, and I ordered a Diet pop, like usual. I’ve been drinking it for so long now, I have a hard time telling if it is diet or regular, unless I can take a sip of regular, then mine to taste the difference. (usually from my hubby’s).
So when I got home, i took a drink of my pop and it didn’t taste diet. I ordered Diet Pepsi, which I usually drink- and this one had a sugary aftertaste and just didn’t seem like diet. So I tested my blood sugar really quick to see- it was 75.
So I went ahead and ate my lunch and decided to drink it, but not a lot (it was a large with a lot of ice, but I only drank about 1/3 of it), and test my B.S. right after lunch, and then again 2 hours later.
(Last time I had a reg. pop was about 2 months ago, and after drinking the tiny regular coke from a McDonald’s happy meal, my blood sugar spiked into the 160’s!)
Well, right after lunch today, it was 97. I started to feel jittery too, and then really tired. Baby was moving around a lot too, but not really a lot more than usual around lunch time. I haven’t felt this way since I last had a sugar rush!
2 hours after starting my lunch, I checked my BS again, and I thought for sure it was high, but it was only 99!

So my question is, how can I tell if I drank diet or regular.. or is there a chance that Gestational Diabetes can go away before baby is born??? I was diagnosed at 29 weeks, and I am now 1 day away from 37 weeks.

btw- I "tested" my pop on a strip with my meter and it just read "high". Just thought I’d try it LOL.

Thanks for your input! :)
Ok, just occured to me later this evening… Diet pop still has caffiene in it.. DUH! That explains my jitters! I think everything’s ok…LOL

If you gave up pop you’d go a long ways to controlling your gestational diabetes, which will not go away until after delivery.

If the soda tests "high" it’s regular.

I’m quite thin- but eat LOADS of junk food…..healthy diet plan please?

September 302009

Basically 2 years ago I tried to start eating healthily- but ended up losing loads of weight.
Does anyone have a really healthy diet plan (not weight loss) where I get my 2000 cals a day.
I know eating crap is really bad for me (I also take no exercise) – but I don’t want to lose weight again because people thought I was anorexic!
I AM VEGETARIAN.

I AM A VEGETARIAN TOO.
teehee =P
Okay for breakfast I suggest 1 cup of non-fat yogurt (100 cals)
2/3 a cup of granola (300 cals)
And a chopped banana (aprox 107 cals)
It makes a tasty breakfast parfait!
Snack – nature valley bar (120-180 cals)
Lunch – your choice, make it about 500 calories.
Snack – pear, apple, plum or orange. (50-100 cals) or 20 peanuts or 6 walnuts or 20 cashews.
Supper – your choice, just make it between 500-600 cals.
dessert – optional.
For some yummy ideas go to kraftcanada.com
(I know it’s Canadian, -im from canada- but it’s mainly recipes so you can modify the ingrediants and go from there, really delicious and they have vegetarian meals that are healthy!)

How have the Italians influenced Australian diets, cuisine and food production/distribution?

pretty please help me!

Australians eat pizzas and pastas like most of the socalled "western world".

The strength of Italian cuisine is – unfortunately – also it’s greatest disadvantage: the ingredients are very basic, and the preparation is very simple.
Therefore pizza and simple pasta-dishes have become part of the diet in many parts of the world, even though they are not really representative of the quality of Italian cuisine.

Is keeping your hear rate low (for weight loss) really effective?

September 302009

I was walking for an hour everyday, keeping my heart rate low and did it for months (while keeping a good food diet) and had low success with weight loss.

However, now I’m interval training with more running (getting my heart rate up) and I’m losing weight (including inches) weekly.

Why do studies tell you to be at the "fat burning zone" which is too slow for me. I can practically fall asleep from the slowness. Don’t get me wroing, I love slow peaceful walks but it doesn’t help me lose weight.

If studies show walkers benefit from weight loss more than runners, than how come the pictures don’t tell the truth? For example, I see a "walking club" of women and they’ve been walking for many months. Yet they still look chubby. However, looking at runners and sprinters, they have very lithe bodies.

So, why haven’t I had sucess with weight loss staying in the "fat burning zone" on ellipticals, but lost weight getting more into the cardio zone?
In other words, staying in the "fat burning zone" didn’t help me lose weight. Getting my heart rate up in the cardio zone helped me lose weight. Can it depend on the individual?

Some people respond better to something called interval training instead of steady state cardio, like walking or jogging. There’s been studies that show that HIIT(high intensity interval training) actually does burn more calories for you throughout the day. Steady state cardio will more likely burn more calories while you are doing the cardio since most people do 45-60 minutes of jogging or walking while HIIT should normally only take 20-30 minutes at the most. If it you are able to do any more time than that on HIIT then you aren’t doing it hard enough. Also, one of the benefits of HIIT is that it is intervals which tricks our bodies so they can’t adapt. Not only this, but you will be in much better cardiovascular shape from doing HIIT as opposed to jogging or walking at a steady, easy pace. You can tell that I really like HIIT, haha.

I’m looking for a really healthy mainly raw food diet, no diary, little fish, can anyone recommend a book?

September 302009

Ideally with shopping lists! I’m not too good at planning in advance! I don’t mean a weight loss diet, more a lifestyle diet and cookery book. Thank you.

You should just get some books on raw eating and then you can just tweak it by adding whatever else you want to it. Or you may have to barrow from several eating plans.I’m not sure if your going to find a book that features that type of diet, as far as I know. But here are are a few books.

and here’s a website.

and this is a community of people who eat raw. Maybe one of them can help you, as far as making a shopping list goes.

Does anyone actually live the Raw Food Diet lifestyle and why does it HAVE to be a Vegetarian /Vegan diet?

September 302009

Do people who are on this diet actually prefer eating cold food vs. warm?
Why can’t raw meats/fish be included in this diet? I am obviously talking theoretically about safe raw meat free of diseased bacteria. Vegetables can contain poisons from the environment just as likely as an animals meat can contain harmful bacteria’s, so given this theory – why is meat and fish left out of this lifestyle?
happybid – I think you need to reread the question. It was not, what is a Vegan? It was, why does this diet have to be veggie or Vegan?
Heelbell – you too, I know that meats and veggies can have harmful things in them; this is why I was speaking theoretically, as I stated. You can get harmful bacteria at a farmers market, nothing is absolute. Besides I grow my own. This was a question of the raw diet not including meat and fish, (which by the way I would eat steak tartar and sashimi multiple times a week without a problem.) And it’s not "obvious that there are a lot of people" on it. I just happend to be a very informed, intelligent person, who likes to learn new things all the time. So next time you want to answer my question I’d appreciate it if you were not so smug and answer the question asked. Not trying to be pissy here but kind of annoid.

I know of raw foodists who eat raw fish, honey, raw egg, and raw dairy products. So, no, they are not vegan or vegetarian. I don’t think people who eat like this comprise the majority of raw foodists, however. I try to incorporate a lot of raw foods into my diet, but it’s hard when traveling to do it healthily, and I don’t feel it’s necessary for me to have a 100% raw diet anyway. I have had some really excellent dishes at raw food restaurants, including the best strawberry cream pie I can ever imagine eating (restaurant in Bangkok). I didn’t notice or care that my meal wasn’t hot. It was more room temperature than cold, anyway. Think about it: you probably eat plenty of cold foods already. Salads, fruits, etc. It’s a very nice way to eat in summer.

is it true that diet foods especially diet sodas cause brain tumors?

September 302009

I know how bad diet sodas are but is it that bad?

It doesn’t cause brain tumors. There have been some tests thought that show negative effects on your weight. Some people drink lots of diet soda because it has zero calories. It still spikes your blood sugar level and crashes later. This leads to increase eating with some people.
Some people advocate a diet similar to ones eaten by our ancestors with the thinking no chemicals will lead to no cancer. I think those people just never got the chance to get old enough to get cancer. (or they didn’t know what killed them)

Raw food diet ? Good recipes?

September 282009

What are some good recipies? why did u choose to go raw?

I don’t know any recipes but be careful when you first start because your going to get sick and throw up a lot since your body isn’t used to eating raw food.

Why are some people so self-righteous when it comes to their pet’s diet?

September 282009

I’ve seen this many times on many different forums. There always has to be a debate about what type of diet people feed their pets.
Almost everyone seems to think that their way is right. Whether it be a BARF (Bones And Raw Food), home-made food, gourmet kibble, or cheap kibble. If someone chooses to feed something else, then they aren’t a very good owner.
Are you a pet owner like this? Why do you think your pet’s diet is the right diet?

My own personal opinion: I feed my pets cheap stuff. Why? Because I have seen firsthand how in the factory the "gourmet" food goes down one conveyor belt and the "cheap" food goes down another. It is the same food in a different bag.
This is done with human food, pet food, clothes, etc. Almost all large companies put out an "expensive" brand and a "cheap" brand. It even comes in the same delivery truck to the grocery store.
My pets also get table scraps. I use my common sense when offering these. They get leftover meats and vegetables.
I think the diet that I feed my pets is just fine. I have 3 cats (10 years, 9 years, 7 months) and 1 dog (7 years). No one has had any health problems so far and they go to vet annually.
I asked three questions: Why are some people so self-righteous when it comes to their pet’s diet? Are you a pet owner like this? Why do you think your pet’s diet is the right diet?

Personally, I started feeding my 2 siamese cats the Royal Canin Siamese 38, which I’m sure is about the most expensive brand available (maybe just slightly under Wellness). The only reason I like Royal Canin is because they tailor their foods to different breeds of cats and dogs to meet specific individual needs. I tried Nutro, Science Diet, Purina, and they all had not very good results. This food is shaped so my cat can’t gobble it down and throw it back up later. I have also noticed that my cat’s (who used to constantly have diarrhea) diarrhea episodes have been drastically reduced. And, to be honest, these cats are very expensive and top-of-the-line pure-bred, so I want to keep them alive as long as possible, so I think its a bit more worth it to give them good food so they live a little longer. I do have to agree that most "premium" pet foods are a scam (don’t every buy science diet!), however I feel very different about RC. I’m a bit like you in the sense that I hate it when people rag on me when I ask a question (Like where can i get the 15-pound bag of the RC i like?) and they say I should be feeding my cat wellness or a barf diet (that doesn’t even sound appetizing). If the brand you feed your dog works for the dog’s health, by all means don’t fix something that’s not broken. In a sense it’s kind of like when people who own Mercedes-Benz’s (atleast in my area) seem to think it’s alright to cut people off in traffic {but, no, it’s always the fault of the person driving the cheap ford}, they always have the right of way, they can go a little faster than everyone else, etc.–some people just feed their cats these "premium" diets because it’s a status symbol, because they like to say they can afford to feed their cats "gold" and use $50 bills as toilet paper (but don’t want to sound tacky, so they say they do it for the animal’s health). I’m not feeding my cats the food they get for the status.
